A Word From Our Editor

Steve Fox, Editorial Director, pcworld.com

Love it or hate it, the return of school signals the beginning of buying season, as kids and their parents prep for the new term. And as classwork grows increasingly dependent on technology, you may find your shopping list skewing further and further toward electronics and high-ticket items. Fortunately, PC World's expert buying guides and reviews can help you avoid expensive mistakes, pointing you to great deals across a wide spectrum of product categories. Who knows -- you may even stumble across something irresistible for yourself that has absolutely nothing to do with school.

Top Products :

Notebooks:
If you want to keep your kid plugged in, a laptop is an obvious must-have for the book bag.

HDTV:
If you're looking to buy a high-definition flat-screen plasma or LCD TV in time for the World Series, it's a great time to be in the hunt: The latest models boast formerly high-end features migrating to mainstream sets.

Cell Phones/Smart Phones:

Get a head start on the school year with a hot new phone. Nearly all cell phones do more than simply make calls and can be great educational tools: You can search the Web, record lectures, and--in some cases--edit documents all from the palm of your hand.
Desktops:
Desktops may lack the portability of laptops, but they continue to provide the best bang for your buck when it comes to computing power, especially if you already have an existing monitor that you can use. Ultimately, a well considered, shrewdly configured PC priced between $500 and $1000 is a great way to start the new school year off on the right foot.

Netbooks:
Netbooks aren't just no-frills notebooks that you can buy for under $500. Sure, if price is really a sticking point (isn't it for everyone these days?) these cost-conscious computers are a godsend.

Printers:

School's starting sooner than you think. Make sure students are ready: A color inkjet multifunction printer (MFP) is a versatile choice, combining a printer, scanner, copier and (sometimes) a fax machine. Good models from our Top 10 chart are available for as little as $100.

Gadgets & Gear :
Sure, it seems like summer just got here, but it's never too early to think about back-to-school shopping. Not sure what are the must-have gadgets this year? We can help. We've assembled a guide to the gear your students need to get their work done, as well as the gear they'll want when it's time to have fun.
